Direct Support Connect® is a job board for people who hire direct support workers and for Minnesota direct support workers, home care workers, and PCAs (Personal Care Assistants) who are looking for employment.
Direct Support Connect® was created to help address the shortage of direct support workers in Minnesota. The resource is funded through collective bargaining agreements with the State of Minnesota and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare Minnesota — the union that represents direct support workers in PCA Choice, Consumer Directed Community Supports and the Consumer Support Grant.
Direct Support Connect® is designed for people who hire individual direct support workers and for direct support workers (or people interested in becoming direct support workers).
Anyone who needs a direct support worker to assist with daily needs can use Direct Support Connect®. This includes people on waiver programs, PCA Choice, Consumer Directed Community Supports (CDCS) and Consumer Support Grants (CSG).
Anyone who provides direct support services can register with Direct Support Connect®.
At this time the site is not designed for agencies to create an account. However, it is appropriate for agencies to support client(s) in creating an account. Please work with your client(s) to create an account instead of putting it under an agency name. Then you can assist them in finding workers.
If you're looking to hire direct support, you can create a profile with Direct Support Connect® that tells direct support workers:
Who you are
What supports you need
When you need direct support
If you're a direct support worker, you can create a profile with Direct Support Connect® that tells people:
Who you are
What experience you have
When you're available to work
Once you complete the online registration process, you can search registry profiles using standard filters and search criteria. To make a connection, click Connect With Me. This allows you to send secure messages through the site. If interested, you can then connect by phone or in person.
The Minnesota Department of Human Services takes data privacy and security seriously and is committed to protecting user information. The Direct Support Connect® website is secure and collects only the minimum amount of data needed to help users connect.
If you need direct support but don't know if you qualify for PCA services, Consumer Directed Community Supports (CDCS) or Consumer Support Grant (CSG), contact the human services office in the county where you live to discuss options and eligibility.
You can request a MnCHOICES assessment from your local human services office. A certified assessor will meet with you to determine what services and programs you qualify for based on your needs, and then you choose what services and programs are right for you.
In the white banner at the top of the page, select the Registration information tab. Select 'For workers' option if you are a support worker, or 'For people who hire' if you are looking to hire a direct support worker.

Yes, some content must be approved before it's displayed in a Direct Support Connect® profile.
The "About Me" field in the Basic Information Section of your profile is approved before publication. This field is a place to write what is important to you and for you. Providing details that might be of interest to a worker or a person who is hiring, may help someone decide if they want to reach out and make a connection with you.
Workers may want to include highlights of their experience, how long they’ve been working in the field, their favorite part of their job, specialized training and skills.
Individuals who hire may want to include your favorite activities, how you like to spend your time, what is most important to you, hobbies, what you are looking for in a worker, and how someone can support you.
The Learner ID, if provided, is reviewed and approved to verify the courses were completed through the College of Direct Support.
UMPI numbers are automatically validated by the Minnesota Department of Human Services provider enrollment database.
The Direct Support Connect® team reviews profiles during regular business hours: Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The need for further review could result in a publication delay.
After completing the online registration process, you can search for people to match your needs. The search function is located in the gold banner. Select Search, and choose the profile you’d like to search for in the drop down menu.
On the ‘Matches For’ page, you can filter your options on the left hand side. The search results will be based on your filters. You can then select the profile to learn more about the person.
If you find someone you think may be a good match, you can select the ‘Connect with Me’ link next to their name. This auto-populates the subject and body of a private email message you can edit or send as-is through the site.
The person will receive a notification to the email address they registered their account with to alert them of a new message.
Individuals can send private messages back and forth within the site to ensure they are a good fit, prior to meeting in person.
SEIU is the healthcare union representing all types of healthcare workers, including direct support workers in PCA Choice, Consumer Directed Community Supports and the Consumer Support Grant, throughout Minnesota.
Direct support workers are not required to be union members to register with Direct Support Connect®.
If desired, information about SEIU is available by contacting:
A Unique Minnesota Provider Identification (UMPI) number is what MHCP (Minnesota Health Care Program) enrolled providers use to bill the state for a worker's services, so a worker can get paid. As a PCA, CSG, or CDCS direct support worker, you receive this number after enrolling with the Minnesota Department of Human Services and becoming affiliated with an MHCP enrolled provider agency.
Pass a DHS Background Study. The agency or fiscal management service entity are responsible for requesting the background study.
Become affiliated with an agency or fiscal management service entity. This provider agency will be given your UMPI once you are affiliated with their agency, and then you can request your UMPI from your agency.
An UMPI number is required when providing care for someone who is receiving Medical Assistance (Medicaid).
Providing an UMPI number allows DHS to validate you are enrolled as an individual MHCP provider and affiliated with a provider agency or fiscal management service (FMS) entity. This means DHS can be billed for services you provide, which means you can be paid for those services, when delivered to someone on Medical Assistance.
Providing an UMPI number in your profile will display any personal care provider agencies or fiscal management service (FMS) entities you are affiliated with.
You are not required to provide an UMPI number to register with Direct Support Connect®.
If you forget your UMPI number, contact your current provider agency or fiscal management service (FMS) entity. Your provider agency or FMS entity is required to have your UMPI number in order to affiliate you with their agency and to bill for the services you provide.
Adding your learner ID to your profile will display a list of courses you’ve taken in Direct Course. These courses highlight your training and skills and may help you make a connection on the site. People who are looking to hire workers may be interested in certain training or skills, and showing you’ve taken courses may help you get hired.
Note: You are not required to provide a Learner ID to register with Direct Support Connect®.
